Abstract
This research is talking about Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) as an instrument of investment in Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX). ETFis a mutual fund that trades like a stock. The objectives of this research are to find out the benefits and weaknesses of ETF, to compare the performance between ETF and its reference index, and also to compare the return and risk of ETF with conventional mutual funds. The main objects of this research are two types of ETF that exist in IDX, called R-LQ45X and R-ABFII. Index LQ-45 and iBoxx ABF Indonesia Index as the reference index, Manulife Saham Andalan mutual funds (RDS MSA) and Schroder Dana Mantap Plus II mutual funds (RDPT SDMP II) as benchmark to conventional mutual funds in measuring return and risk of each investment in the period of January 2008 until April 2009. The method used is library research to secondary data that were collected from official institution, newspaper and internet. This research also use Independent Samples t-Test with α=0.05 to know the significant differences of average return between ETFs and conventional mutual funds. The results show that the performance of ETFs are can not exceed the markets performance. Either R-LQ45X and R-ABFII, their performance are lower than conventional mutual funds. The results from Independent Samples t-Test show that there is no significant differences of average return between R-LQ45X and RD MSA also R-ABFII and RD SDMP II.
